Data Model Manager

The Data Model Manager is a 'mini' console designed to enable users who have processing or administrative rights to perform basic management of hosted data models directly from within the BI Office “NEW” backstage interface.

Click the “Manage Data Model” button. If clicked, a pop-up box will appear with six options:

  • Refresh Model Data: This allows users to update the data model by re-reading source data. It is important that the model has a data source that can be accessed from the server and that the service account that runs the analysis services engine has rights to access and read the data.

NOTE: The process function is available to users that have EITHER process or administrative rights to the database.

WARNING: The console will return any errors in data processing. Most often these errors are related to data access. Users should take care to set up the data sources to ensure there are no access issues.

  • Delete Cube Database: This allows power users to remove data models from the server.

NOTE: The delete function is only available to users with administrative rights.

WARNING: Care should be taken since there is no "undo" for this action.

  • Cube Query Mode: This allows power users to change the style of model’s query mode. There are 2 choices:
    • In-memory: the cube is held in memory only and all data must be pre-read and pre-processed before queries can be executed.
    • In-memory Direct Query: Both techniques are used, with in-memory data caching deployed first, before the direct query technique is utilized.

NOTE: Direct-query variations can only operate on cubes that use SQL Server relational databases as data sources that have no in-column calculations.

NOTE: The query-mode changing function is only available to users with administrative rights.

WARNING: The console will return any errors in changing the query mode. Most often these errors are related to the type of database (not SQL) and the existence of column calculations in the cube definition.

  • Delete Excel Files: This allows users to delete source Excel spreadsheets from the server used in a data model. This is only available for those data models that have been built using the Data Model wizard.

NOTE: The delete function is only available to users with administrative rights.

WARNING: Care should be taken since there is no "undo" for this action.

  • Model Maintenance - Edit Data Model: This allows users to open and edit the underlying data model. It is only available for those data models that have been built using the Data Model wizard.
  • Schedule refresh: Data Model SchedulerThis allows users (with the appropriate access) to automate a reprocessing and refresh of their data models based on a schedule.

NOTE: This feature is only available for Data Models and Tabular models where the user has administrative access.

  • Model Sharing: This allows the user to allocate specific role permissions for this data model.

Editing Data Models from Inside Data Discovery

Basic changes to data models can also be made from inside Data Discovery directly. These changes include the ability to add new base measures and user hierarchies "on-the-fly". Click here for more detail.
